Why FayrShare exists

I built FayrShare because Splitwise annoyed me.

When my friends and I go away, we use an app to keep track of who paid for meals, drinks and taxis. Usually that was Splitwise. Then it started charging for more and more things that are pretty much fundamental to how an app like that works, and it annoyed the hell out of me.

So on holiday in Cyprus, for a friend’s wedding, I built my own with Claude Code. I can’t code. It took a few days of hacking and experimenting, and it wasn’t pretty, but it worked, and everyone in the group used it for the rest of the week: drinks, the taxi to the airport, padel. At the end it told us who owed whom in the fewest payments, and we were done.

I filmed the whole thing: I Can’t Code, but I Built a Splitwise Clone in Two Days.

What it is now

In October 2026 I rebuilt it properly. You make a group, share the invite link, add what you spend (split equally, by exact amounts or by percentage) and FayrShare works out who pays whom. Each group has its own currency: pounds, euros or dollars. It runs in your phone’s browser and sits on your home screen like an app, with nothing to download.

Why it’s free

Because the whole point was to have one that doesn’t paywall the basics. There’s no subscription, no ads and no premium tier.

Who’s behind it

I’m Neil Stephenson. I live in South London and build things with AI. FayrShare is a side project that I use myself.
