A free Splitwise alternative with no daily limit
Splitwise is the app most groups reach for, and it’s good. But the free plan now has a daily cap on how many expenses you can add, and things like receipt scanning, search and currency conversion sit behind Splitwise Pro. If all your group needs is to log who paid for what and settle up at the end, FayrShare does that for free, with no cap.
Here is a straight comparison, including where Splitwise is still the better choice.
Stick with Splitwise if…
you want receipt scanning, mixed currencies converted for you, split by shares, or an app in a language other than English, and you’re happy to pay for Pro or live with the daily limit.Try FayrShare if…
you want the basics without a cap or ads: groups, equal, exact or percentage splits, and the fewest payments to settle up, all free.FayrShare vs Splitwise at a glance

The daily limit, in practice
Splitwise’s help centre says it “has introduced a daily expense limit for our free tier” [2]. It doesn’t publish the number. Its suggested workarounds are to wait for the limit to reset, ask a friend to add expenses for you, or subscribe to Pro.
On a normal week that may never bother you. On a group holiday it will. Take a long weekend in Lisbon for four: the flat, two taxis, a supermarket shop, coffees, lunch, dinner and a round of drinks is eight expenses on the first day alone. Logging them as you go is what stops arguments later, and that’s exactly the day a cap gets in the way.
Where Splitwise is genuinely better
- More ways to split. Splitwise can split by shares and adjustments, and itemise a bill [4]. FayrShare does equal, exact amounts and percentages. For a couple and two singles sharing a villa, you’d use percentages in FayrShare (for example 50%, 25%, 25%).
- Mixed currencies. Splitwise lets a group hold several currencies, and Pro converts them [6]. A FayrShare group uses one currency (pounds, euros or dollars).
- Receipts, search and charts, on Pro [3]. FayrShare has none of these.
- Native apps and languages. Splitwise has iPhone and Android apps and comes in English plus 11 other languages [1]. FayrShare runs in the browser and sits on your home screen, in English.
How to move a group from Splitwise to FayrShare
There’s no import, but you don’t need one. Carry the balances across, then carry on.
- In Splitwise, open the group and note what each person owes or is owed (with Simplify debts on, it’s a short list).
- In FayrShare, start a group in the same currency and add everyone by name.
- For each debt, add one expense called “Balance from Splitwise”, paid by the person who is owed, split by exact amounts with the whole amount on the person who owes it.
- Share the invite link in your group chat. New expenses go in FayrShare from now on.
Example. Splitwise says Sam owes you £42.50 and Jo owes Priya £18.00. In FayrShare, add “Balance from Splitwise” for £42.50, paid by you, with Sam’s exact share £42.50 and everyone else £0. Then add £18.00 paid by Priya, with Jo’s share £18.00. FayrShare now shows the same balances, and anything you add later builds on them.
Why FayrShare exists
I built it after Splitwise started charging for things that felt fundamental, on holiday with friends who all used it for the rest of the week. The full story is on the about page. It’s free because that was the point.
Questions
Is FayrShare really free?
Yes. There is no paid plan, no ads and no limit on how many expenses or groups you add.
Can I import my Splitwise groups?
Not automatically. The quickest way is to carry each person’s balance across as one expense, as shown above, and start fresh from there.
Do my friends need to sign up?
To see the group and add expenses themselves, yes, with Google or an email address. You can add people by name before they join, so you can start the group without them.
Does FayrShare send money?
No. It keeps the tally. You pay each other however you normally do, by bank transfer or cash, and mark it as paid.
